Frequently Asked Questions
Speech therapy is a specialised service providing assessment, therapeutic advice, exercises and techniques for impairments in communication ability and/or swallow function. It’s carried out by Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs), who are Allied Health Professionals qualified at degree level or higher. SLTs may specialise in working with children, adults, learning disabilities and/or an area of clinical interest.
Adults with any acquired neurological condition affecting their ability to communicate or swallow. For example: Parkinson’s disease, Stroke, Motor Neurone Disease (MND), Functional neurological disorders (FND), brain injuries, dementia, Multiple sclerosis (MS), Multiple system atrophy (MSA), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), and many more.
Typically, an initial assessment will be a combination of tests, observations and discussion to address all concerns from both a client’s perspective and those around them i.e. family, friends and carers.
Follow up sessions involve working with individuals towards agreed goals. Exercises may be recommended between therapy sessions to maximise progress.
Initial assessments take between 1- 2 hours depending on preparation time, complexity of the assessment and any written reports required. Regular therapy sessions are 45 minutes. The number of sessions required will vary according to the individual’s needs and goals.
Please get in touch by phone or email to check whether I am the right fit for you and to discuss expectations of therapy outcomes.
After an initial assessment, a personalised therapy plan will be created based on the results.
Therapy sessions can take place in your preferred location: at home, a day centre, care/nursing home, a clinic room in Bishops Stortford, or via telehealth (video or telephone).
